My mom was raised a catholic and I kinda was, but then we started going to a Baptist Church in Santa Monica, Ca... Imagine my surprise when I find out that the Christian in the family came from my Irish grand mother, but actually a generation earlier, on my Grandad's side was Polish Jew... My Mom had always told me not to say anything bad of anyone but especially the Jews!!! I always wondered why... Then when I was in high school, my uncle told me the story of how the family came to America, and just before the great war (WW1) a large part of the family living on both sides of the German, Polish border was able to get over here... When the war broke out many joined up to go fight the Huns, but those that stayed behind started to feel the same persecution that they had felt in Europe... So they figure they could pass as Dutch we became a family of Dutch immigrants!!!!

Mom was always somewhat of an activist, we went on walks and marches, rallies meetings for everything and anything... One summer day she heard on the radio that the guy that took over the American Nazi party, after George Rockwell was shot, was coming to LA to round up more members, and they where going to put on a demonstration of their power and strength... This was the perfect place for mom to let the world know how she felt about all this... She asked me to take her down to the demonstration and I did, much to my surprise the Nazi's had maybe 30, 40 members dressed in their Brown shirts, and just a couple of KKK members in robes, they had a microphone set up. And some old bitter redneck was yelling white power white power over and over again... Now I have to give the man a little credit for either bravery or just plain stupid (me thinks the later), for across the street were we were, there must have been a thousand people, all the colors of the rainbow...on the Nazi side the cops had made a line, I think to protect the Nazi's from us... About the time the cops started giving instructions on constitutional law and the right of a lawful assembly.. A a din of marching feet could be heard, it was coming from down the street, and now even the brave Nazi got quiet!!! It was not more police or even the national guard but a large group of well dressed black men in bow ties, the black Muslims... I knew trouble was coming and that I had better get Mom out of there... But when I turned around she was gone... The next thing I saw to my horror was my mom running across the street with a beer bottle she had found, waving it madly over her head till it left her fingers, and like that bottle was on a mission from God it tumbles and Hooked till it hit the Nazi speaker right smack in the head!!!! The whole world was silent, and for a moment the world was at peace then the fit hit the shan!!!! The biggest brawl I ever saw broke out, five cops had my Mom and she was putting up a fight, I was trying to make my way to rescue Mom when the entire crowd decided it was time to greet the Brown shirts nice and personal!!! the next thing I knew I was choking on tear gas, my mom was being manhandled into the back of the paddy wagon, the loud mouth Nazi was out like a light on the ground and the dance began!!! My mom was always proud of that day and so was I, My step dad was pissed.... Gee I miss the old gal!!!
